The Sun and the Moon free essay sample

The Nigerian Folktale, how the Sun and the Moon came to Live in the Sky, describes the Sun and the Moon married as husband and wife. The Sun and the Moon lived together in a small house until they build a bigger house. They invited water and his friends to visit and water overflowed there house. The Sun and the Moon climbed a ladder and perched into the sky, escaping from water, where they stayed ever since. In the article, Shredding Light on the Sun and the Moon, states that â€Å"the sun is the most important star to people on Earth because without it, nothing could survive. The sun is 93 million miles away from earth and the light from the sun takes only a little more than eight minutes to reach earth. In addition, the radius of the sun is 109 times larger than the radius of Earth; which the sun would have to be big enough to provide heat for earth. Therefore, the sun has layers, where the core is much hotter and the core is estimated to reach temperatures of more than 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. According to the article, Shredding Light on the Sun and the Moon, states that â€Å"the moon is Earth’s closest neighbor and the Earth’s moon is its only natural satellite. † The moon has three different layers; the crust, the mantle and the core. Unlike Earth, the moon’s temperature varies greatly from -280 degrees Fahrenheit at night to 260 degrees Fahrenheit in the daytime. The moon reflects the light form the sun; which it has no light that it produces on its own and one side of the moon continually faces Earth. In addition, compared to Earth’s gravity, â€Å"the gravity on the moon is about 1/6 that of Earth,† which means that someone on Earth weighing 150 pounds would weigh 25 pounds on the moon. The Nigerian Folktale, how the Sun and the Moon came to Live in the Sky, would change based on the facts in the article Shredding Light on the Sun and the Moon. First, the Folktale states that, â€Å"when he saw the Sun, the water welcomed his friends, and the two entered the Water’s house and sat down to chat†¦.. According to the article, this would change the folktale based on the fact that the Sun is â€Å"93 million miles away from Earth† and the water and the Sun is too far apart to visit each other. Secondly, the Folktale states that, â€Å"the water began to flow into Sun’s house, bringing all the creatures that lived in the water, along with the rivers, creeks, brooks, lakes and ponds. † Therefore, this would change the folktale based on the fact that, â€Å"the light form the Sun reaches Earth very quickly. Cruising at a speed of about 186,000 mile per second† and the Sun travel to Earth faster than the water traveling to the Sun. Finally, the folktale states that, â€Å"the flood rose as high as all the windows rose nearly to the roof, the Sun and the Moon found themselves on the top of the roof, and still the water flowed in. †As stated in the article, â€Å"the radius of the Sun is 109 times larger than the radius of Earth† and this would change the folktale because the Sun is larger than Earth, therefore, the Sun is larger than the body of water.
